I’m James, and I’ve lived in London for the past few years, having previously worked for Ramblers in their membership department. I’ve also worked for VisitBritain, the British tourist board, and currently work for VISITFLANDERS, the tourist board of the Flanders region of Belgium (Bruges, Ypres etc)
After growing up in Surrey, I lived in Bristol and Edinburgh, and I consider the Highlands of Scotland my home away from home, being fortunate that I can often be found on the shores of Loch Sunart in Strontian, near Fort William.
Professional background in travel trade & tourism destination marketing, non-profit, charity, membership, supporter care/engagement. Previously responsible for co-ordination & delivery of onsite digital product, creative & relevant content across the VisitBritain Commercial Division websites; trade, education & retail. Managed the development of VB's online travel trade education training programme, BritAgent. At VisitEngland, I worked on b2b email marketing, corporate comms & CRM. Further experience gained in membership, supporter and volunteer liaison at Ramblers, protecting and enhancing the rights of way network; securing the right of responsible access over open countryside; protecting the environment; and promoting walking as a socially inclusive, healthy & sustainable activity.
I am studying towards a Lowland Walk Leader qualification, provided by Mountain Training England (I attended a training course in November 2019, with Assessment dates in late 2020), with the long term plan to gain full Mountain Leadership & walking/tour guiding/expedition qualifications or work with adventure/walking tour operators, youth development/DofE volunteering/freelance assessment or become an outdoor counsellor helping those struggling with mental health issues through outdoor education.
I'm a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS), where I attend regular lectures and travel events hosted both by the society and external organisations. I am also a Trustee and Community Champion for Sustainable Merton, Merton's leading environmental charity.
